2016 Prize and Awards Winners

The Japan Wood Research Society Prize

The Japan Wood Research Society Prize was awarded to Hisashi ABE, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, for his work “Studies on the formation of xylem cell walls and the development of advanced techniques for wood identification”, and to Hirofumi HIRAI, Faculty of Agriculture, Shizuoka University, for his work “Studies on lignin biodegradation by hyper lignin-degrading fungus and its applications”.

The Japan Wood Research Society Progress Award

The Japan Wood Research Society Progress Award was awarded to Taku TSUYAMA, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Miyazaki, for his work “Transport mechanism of lignin precursors in differentiating xylem”, and to Shuji FUJISAWA, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, for his work “Surface grafting of cellulose nanofibrils towards polymer nanocomposite materials”.

The Japan Wood Research Society Regional Scientific Promotion Award

The Japan Wood Research Society Regional Scientific Promotion Award was awarded to Takeshi KATAYAMA, Faculty of Agriculture, Kagawa University, for his work “Contribution to academic promotion in Shikoku region by research on forest biomass chemistry”, to Keisuke KWAKAMI, Tottori Prefecture Forestry Research Center, for his work “Contribution to promotion of science by the developments of production processing and quality stabilization technology of the wood-based materials and revitalization of wood industries in Chugoku region, Japan”, and to Shinichi KIKUCHI, Hokkaido Research Organization, Forest Products Research Institute, for his work “Contribution to regional timber industry by the improvement of fireproof performance of wooden materials”.

The Japan Wood Research Society Technology Award

The Japan Wood Research Society Technology Award was awarded to Yasuhiro TERANISH, Nara Forest Research Institute, for his work “The study of steam-heated/radio-frequency hybrid drying for sugi boxed-heart timbers”.

The Japan Wood Research Society Outstanding Woman Student Award

The Japan Wood Research Society Outstanding Woman Student Award was awarded to Mikako TACHIOKA, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, for her work “Functional study of the fungal cellulase by mutagenesis and structure analysis”.

The Japan Wood Research Society Best Paper Award

The Japan Wood Research Society Best Paper Award was awarded to Naoyuki FURUTA, Yasushi HIRABAYASHI, Junko MIYAZAKI, and Yoshinori OHASHI, Hokkaido Research Organization, Forest Products Research Institute, for their work “Variation in veneer properties with the radial direction of logs and effect of pruning on Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) planted in Hokkaido”, Mokuzai Gakkaishi, Vol. 62, No. 5, and to Yuan LI, Frank LAM, Faculty of Forestry, The University of British Colombia, for their work “Low cycle fatigue tests and damage accumulation models on the rolling shear strength of cross-laminated timber”, Journal of Wood Science, Vol. 62, No. 3.

Mokuzai Gakkaishi (Journal of the Japan Wood Research Society)

Mokuzai Gakkaishi is another official journal of the Japan Wood Research Society. This journal publishes original articles, notes, review articles, and announcements from the Society in Japanese but with English abstracts, tables, and figure captions for original reports.
